Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Kern County labor, material prices and the conditions on your property move the real number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

How much does it cost to fix a leaning fence?
It comes down to how many posts have failed. A lean from one or two posts is a standard repair in the table. If half the posts in the run are loose or rotted, it costs less to rebuild that run once than to pay for several separate visits.
Why is my fence leaning, and can it be fixed without replacing it?
In most cases it can. In Bakersfield a fence leans for a few usual reasons. Sprinklers keep the base of a wood post wet until it rots off at the soil line. Wind pushes on a solid fence day after day and works shallow footings loose. And irrigated soil softens around posts that were set when the ground was dry and hard. If the rails and boards are still good, we replace the posts and hang the fence back on them.
How much does it cost to replace a rotted fence post?
One or two posts usually fall in the $300 to $900 national range. The job is to pull the old post, break out or dig around its concrete, set a new post and refasten the rails. Many owners here have us swap a rotted wood post for galvanized steel, which changes the material cost a little and stops the same failure from coming back.
My gate sags and will not latch. Repair or replace?
Most of the time, repair. A gate sags because the hinge post has moved, the hinges are worn or the frame has dried out and gone out of square, which is common in valley heat. We plumb or replace the post, brace the frame corner to corner and reset the latch. If the frame itself is split or rotted, a new gate is the better spend.
How much does a contractor charge to fix a broken gate latch?
That is a minor repair, $100 to $300 by national 2026 figures. Most fence companies have a minimum trip charge, so it pays to have loose pickets or a sticking gate looked at on the same visit.
My fence posts shifted and the gate will not close. Can they be reset?
Yes, but straightening them by force does not hold. On the valley floor the ground does not freeze deep, so frost is not the cause in Bakersfield. Shallow footings, soaked soil from irrigation and wind are. The fix that lasts is a new, deeper footing. Tehachapi and the other mountain communities are different: the ground there does freeze, and posts set too shallow can be lifted over a winter.
My fence line goes wavy every year. Is it the soil or a bad installation?
Usually some of each. Soil that is flooded by sprinklers in summer and dries between waterings swells and shrinks, and wood rails bow as they dry in the heat. Posts set shallow or spaced too far apart let that movement show. Deeper posts, closer spacing and keeping water off the fence line take most of the wave out.
A branch bent my aluminum fence. Do I need a whole new panel?
Not always. Some aluminum fences are assembled from separate rails and pickets, and a bent piece can be changed by itself. Others are welded or riveted panels, and the damaged panel is replaced whole. A photo is normally enough for us to tell which you have.
