If a storm took part of your fence down, take photos of the damage and of what caused it before you move anything, then call your insurer and a fence company. Around Bakersfield the cause is nearly always wind. Strong gusts ahead of a front, or winds off the mountains near Arvin and Tehachapi, push over solid fences whose posts were already weak.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
Call us with a photo and the rough length that is down. A fallen section with broken posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 by national 2026 figures. After a big wind event every fence company in Kern County gets busy at once, so the sooner you call, the sooner you are on the schedule.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
The opening can be closed for now. Standing posts are braced and a temporary panel goes across the gap until the permanent repair is done. Tell us when you call that dogs are in the yard, or that the yard has a pool, because an open pool barrier is a safety problem and should not wait.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
Sometimes. Each company sets its own policy on after-hours work, so ask before anyone drives out. The cheaper route is usually a quick temporary closure now and the full repair during the normal work week.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
It can. Many homeowners policies treat a fence as an other structure, and wind is a commonly covered cause, but your policy wording and deductible decide it. A short section may cost less than the deductible. Your agent or insurer is the only one who can say. We provide a written estimate you can send them.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
In most cases your own policy covers your own fence, no matter whose tree it was. That can change if the tree was plainly dead or dangerous and the owner had been told. Ask your insurer. For a fence on the shared boundary, California's fence law also applies, as explained below.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Ask for the calculation in writing. Some policies pay the depreciated value of an old fence instead of the cost to rebuild it. Send the adjuster an itemized estimate and ask them to respond to it. If the gap does not close, repairing just the damaged run is often what the payment will cover.
The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
For a fence on the boundary, California law presumes both owners benefit and are equally responsible for the reasonable cost of maintaining or replacing it, unless they have agreed otherwise in writing (Civil Code section 841). If the argument is about where the line is, that is a job for a licensed land surveyor. See our page on shared fences for the notice the law requires.
